Slovakia is preparing for a new variant of coronavirus

While to this day a new variant of the coronavirus has been recorded in more distant countries, omicron is already approaching us. It was recorded by our neighbors – the Czech Republic and Austria.

The coronavirus mutation was confirmed today by tests on a woman from Liberec, who had a positive result in the previous two tests. This woman was to spend her holidays in Namibia with stopovers in South Africa and Dubai.

So we can assume that the woman became infected in South Africa. It was there that the variant with the original designation B.1.1.529 was first reported on Wednesday, November 24.

The suspicion of Omikron in Austria came on Saturday evening. The person again spent time in Africa, specifically in the southern part. Although she showed no symptoms upon arrival, she tested positive for COVID-19.

This option raises some concerns. The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that it could have a higher infectivity. However, we are not yet able to confirm whether the variant is more easily transmitted or causes a more severe course of the disease compared to other coronavirus variants.

Unlike our neighbors, omikron has not yet appeared in our country. However, as ÚVZ spokeswoman Daša Račková added, the office prioritizes positive samples from Slovaks who came from potentially risky countries.

Monday to 12:00 about 120 such people responded to the call. The Office also sequences all positive samples from persons who have registered in the eHranica system. Slovakia is thus preparing for the possible arrival of a new variant by controlling people coming from abroad.
