Apple would work on several types of chargers (multiple, remote …) – Frandroid

Despite the failure of AirPower, Apple would not have given up on the idea of offering a multi-device charger and was also working on other systems, such as remote wireless charging.

Apple would work on several types of chargers (multiple, remote, etc.)

A pioneer in many ways, Apple is clearly behind its competition when it comes to recharging its devices. Certainly MagSafe is an ingenious system, but it is more about the system of magnets than the recharge itself, the latter based on a simple 15 Watt coil. Several manufacturers already offer double the power and Xiaomi even introduced a 100W wireless charger. But the Cupertino company has not said its last word.

The return of AirPower?

In his latest newsletter (Power On), Mark Gurman, journalist for Bloomberg, says Apple is working hard on different charging technologies, starting with a multi-device charger. In 2017, the brand unveiled the AirPower, a “mat” allowing up to three devices to be charged at the same time. However, the accessory does never been marketed, the fault of a design issue causing excessive heat.

Since then, others have taken the lead. Xiaomi still with a similar charging pad, but also Belkin or Mophie, who offer several 3-in-1 charging stations for iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods, available from the Apple Store. Apple could nevertheless offer its own solution in the future, according to Mark Gurman. It remains to be seen when.

More innovative technologies

More so, Apple is said to be working on different charging technologies. The journalist of Bloomberg cites in particular short and long distance wireless charging. It reminds the Xiaomi Mi Air Charge, capable of recharging a telephone remotely from the moment the latter is “visible” by the station.

Mark Gurman also mentions reverse wireless charging, a principle already present in the competition for several years. This would allow you to recharge your iPhone using your iPad, or even your Apple Watch or AirPods using your iPhone.

Several of this information has already been mentioned for several years, but the fact that Apple is working on it does not mean that it will be available soon. Tim Cook and his teams are known to have a very high level of requirement and if a product or a technology does not meet the standards set internally, it could remain in the boxes of Cupertino for a long time to come …
