BELGRADE – Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic is unlikely to play in the January Australian Open grand slam tournament. The reason is the rule on compulsory coronavirus vaccination for participants, which his father Srdjan called “blackmail”.

The 34-year-old, who could compete for a record 21st Grand Slam title in Melbourne, declined to answer if he was vaccinated.

“Of course he’d like to go there. But I don’t know if that will be the case. Probably not under these conditions, with this blackmail,” AFP quoted the words of Srdjan Djokovič, the father of the nine-time event champion.

According to tournament boss Craig Tiley, Djokovic considers vaccination information to be a private matter. “We’d like to see Novak here. He knows he has to be vaccinated to play here,” said the official.
