Unsurprisingly, a significant amount of snow has fallen in the last 24 hours in the Pyrenees, where Météo France is finally maintaining its orange vigilance, up to Monday 29 November 2021 4 p.m., in four departments: Hautes-Pyrénées, the Haute-Garonne and theAriège, but also the Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

According to Meteo France, This Sunday at 3 p.m., there was already a hell of a lot of snow in the mountains, where the conditions are extreme.

The snowpack is thick over the Pyrenees with accumulations largely exceeding 1m above 1700m and with displacement due to the wind. The latter is strong in high mountains with north-northwest gusts of 70 to 100 km / h in medium and high mountains (up to 127 km / h measured at the Pic du Midi at midday) and temperatures below -10 ° C above 2000 m.

According to Météo France readings, at 6 p.m. this Sunday, the layer of snow was already reaching:

• 140 cm at Ardiden station (Hautes-Pyrénées) at 2445m
• 124 cm in Maupas (Haute-Garonne)
• 107 cm in Cauterets (Hautes-Pyrénées)
• 103 cm at la Mongie (Hautes-Pyrénées)
• 99 cm at Port-d’Aula (Ariège)
• 92 cm in Soum-Couy (Pyrénées-Atlantiques)
• 74 cm at Aiguillettes (Hautes-Pyrénées)
• 45 cm in l’Hospitalet (Ariège) at 2293m with a gust of 63 km / h and in Aston (Ariège)
• 44 cm in Loudervielle (Hautes-Pyrénées) at 1587m.

Lower, Météo France recorded at 6 p.m. 13 cm in Luchon (Haute-Garonne) at 618m, 8 cm in Adast (Hautes-Pyrénées) and 2 cm on the side of Campistrous (Hautes-Pyrénées). “If there is wind, we will quickly reach 2 meters per snowdrift,” observes Christophe Dedieu, president of the Météo Pyrénées association, who corroborates these readings.

What is Météo France forecasting?

Regarding the forecast, Météo France indicates that “The precipitation will continue globally until Monday noon, with temporarily moderate intensity between tonight and the end of the night ”, which can reach 2 to 5 centimeters per hour). The rain-snow limit begins to rise slightly to the west of the chain in the evening to be of the order of 500 to 600 meters.

Upon arrival, the accumulations will be substantial over the entire episode. Monday morning, Météo France even forecasts “1.50 meters or more in high mountains, in accumulation zones”, and “5 to 7 cm on the Ariège from 400 meters”. Precipitation is expected to weaken on Monday morning, and gradually stop, “with warm weather occurring from the west”.

High risk of avalanche in the western Pyrenees

Note also that Météo France has triggered orange vigilance for “a strong avalanche risk” on the west of the massif, in particular the Hautes-Pyrénées, and yellow on the other departments. According to Météo Pyrénées, an avalanche occurred on Sunday at the end of the day at Iraty (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), where the Route des Chalets is cut off.
