A strong earthquake with a local magnitude of 7.5 occurred in the Peru area shortly before noon today. The earthquake was noticeable in a wide area.

A very strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 occurred today at 11:52 our time in the north of Peru.

The tremors were felt in a wide area around Ecuador, Colombia and northern Peru. The epicenter of the earthquakes was located on the western edge of the Amazon.

Due to the very deep location of the hypocenter, 112 kilometers below the surface, no destructive damage occurred.

Nevertheless, major damage has been reported in the form of collapsed walls or damaged roofs and taller buildings.

The quake also occurred in a sparsely populated area, with the strongest quakes affecting around 27,000 people in the surrounding areas.

Due to the strength of the earthquake, casualties and major damage are not excluded, but especially in remote areas.

Authorities have not yet commented on the number of injured or victims. However, it is possible that people are trapped in the rubble.
