“Autonomy is not independence”: Lecornu clarifies his point on Guadeloupe – BFMTV

Friday evening, in a speech, the Minister of Overseas Territories threw a paving stone in the pond by evoking the possibility of granting an “autonomy” to Guadeloupe while the island sinks into violence around the question of compulsory vaccination. He specified the government’s intentions this Sunday in the JDD.

The Polynesian example

Friday evening, in a speech intended for Guadeloupe, Sébastien Lecornu assured that the government was “ready” for a debate on the “autonomy” of their island. The idea was to let go of political ballast to get out of the crisis as quickly as possible, while the West Indies flare up around the issue of the vaccine obligation initially imposed on caregivers, and already postponed by the executive. In the new edition of Sunday newspaper, Sébastien Lecornu defended himself for having paved the way for an attack on the integrity of French territory. “Autonomy is certainly not independence: it already exists for certain overseas communities to varying degrees, the most advanced model being, for example, Polynesia,” he said.

“If the government does not propose statutory changes, it cannot deny that this aspiration has largely emerged on the ground, in relations with the State and in Paris,” he continued, however.

The Minister of Overseas Territories, however, warned. Differentiate health policy in the West Indies, not “to apply” the law on compulsory vaccination would amount, according to him, to “less well” protect the region and its inhabitants than the Hexagon.
