The Czech Republic reports the first case of omicron mutation. Laboratories allegedly detected the virus in a woman from Liberec who returned from Namibia. “At the moment, one of the laboratories in the Czech Republic is verifying the possible occurrence of a positive sample of the omicron variant in the territory of our state,” said Štěpánka Čechová, a spokeswoman for the State Institute of Public Health (SZÚ).
“An epidemiological investigation is carried out with a person who has been examined for a positive sample by the relevant regional hygiene station, which sets out anti-epidemic measures. According to the information available to us, she stated that she was staying in Namibia before returning to the Czech Republic, “Čechová added.
“The good news is that this lady is vaccinated, has an easy course and the result of the sequencing test will be tomorrow. We will of course inform the media, “wrote the incumbent Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš on Twitter.
Experts around the world are afraid of the new mutation. “There is nothing worse than a new variant of the coronavirus that has emerged in South Africa,” said German health expert Karl Lauterbach. Currently, the most widespread variant of the Delta has caused the worst epidemiological situation in many countries since the outbreak of the pandemic, and now there is a risk of an even worse “plague,” experts warn.
