Slovak national team did not enter the eight finals of the world championships: Wang Yang is quarantined – Športky.sk

HOUSTON – Slovakia is no longer represented at the ongoing World Championships in Houston, USA. The last representative of the Slovak Republic in the game, Yang Wang, could not compete in the eight-final duel of the men’s singles against the reigning European champion German Tim Boll.

He was identified as a close contact with a person with a coronavirus and is currently in quarantine. Boll advanced to the elite eight without a fight. The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) informed about the quarantine of the 27-year-old Slovak representative on the social network. “So far, this is the only case of the corona at these world championships,” German Sports Director Richard Prause confirmed to DPA, saying that after the case was announced, Wang no longer had time to take the test and start the match.

The security measures at the Houston Championships are not as strict as those at the Tokyo Olympics. Although only vaccinated athletes and members of the implementation teams could come to the USA, the actors did not have to test every day at the tournament venue and could, for example, move freely in hotels.

Wang reached the eighth final two years ago at the championship in Budapest. However, the Chinese native no longer got a chance to improve the best Slovak result in singles at the World Championships in the era of independence Ľubomír Pištej from the World Championships 2017 in Düsseldorf and Milan Grman from the World Championships 1997 in Manchester.
