South African variant, Fauci: “We are rushing to get data”

The United States is “rushing” to collect data on the South African covid variant. This was stated by Anthony Fauci interviewed today by CNN, underlining that there is concern due to the high number of mutations it contains. “Right now we are gathering the material with our South African colleagues to have a situation in which we can actually test” this virus, added the American virologist, admitting that we are facing a “red flag” situation. “Once tested, we will know for sure whether or not it evades the antibodies we have built for example against the virus with the vaccine” he added that “at the moment we do not have the answer, but we will for sure”. Regarding the possibility of the United States following the European countries that have blocked flights with South Africa and other countries in the region, Fauci believes that “as soon as we have more information, we will make a decision as quickly as possible”. “This is why we are rushing now to gather the scientific data to try and make an informed decision,” he concluded.
