Experts fear that it could leak the immune system.
Researchers warn of a new variant of the coronavirus. The strain contains an extremely high number of mutations in the so-called spike protein, and experts are concerned that it could escape the immune system. It could potentially be the source of further waves of the pandemic. The mutation was first discovered in Botswana, and has since been detected in South Africa and Hong Kong.
John Nkengasong of the African Union’s Centered Disease Control and Prevention Center (CDC) stressed on Thursday that the data will be reviewed and evaluated.
“We have to do more studies, there is a lot we do not know about the new coronavirus variant. We have to look at this data very carefully before we make a statement. The necessary target for our continent is a 70 percent vaccination rate,” Nkengasong added.
The number of new cases in Africa fell by 11 percent compared to the previous week and the number of deaths by 15 percent.
According to the African CDC, a total of about 8.6 million cases of the disease have been documented in Africa so far, of which more than 222,000 have been fatal.
