MOSCOW. Russian Army Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov and US Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley spoke on Tuesday about several worrying security issues.

The call came at a time when the West feared that Moscow was planning a military invasion of Ukraine, TASS and AFP reported.

“The military commanders spoke about several security-related issues of concern. The telephone conversation was a continuation of communication between the two leaders aimed at ensuring risk reduction and operational conflict prevention,” a statement from the Corps of Chiefs of Staff said.

According to him, in accordance with the current practice, both parties agreed not to publish the details of the interview.

In its statement, the Russian Ministry of Defense also did not specify the topics of the conversation between these high-ranking military officials.

Western countries began to be concerned this month about alleged activity by Russian troops near the Ukrainian border. Allegations that Russia was planning an invasion of Ukraine also began to emerge in this connection. However, Russia rejects all these claims, according to AFP.

Last week, therefore, Ukraine asked its Western allies for military assistance. Two US patrol boats arrived at the Ukrainian port of Odessa on Tuesday. However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned the United States that sending military aid to Ukraine would only increase tensions in the region.

Similar tensions erupted in the spring of this year, when the US and the North Atlantic Alliance accused Russia of moving up to 100,000 troops, tanks and fighters to the border with Ukraine.

The crisis has eased since the US president Joe Biden proposed to the Russian president Vladimir Putin meeting held in Geneva in June.
