These are the presidential candidates and opposition leaders detained in Nicaragua

The arrests, ordered based on different accusations of corruption and the alleged violation of the so-called “Law for the Defense of the Rights of the People to Independence, Sovereignty and Self-determination for Peace”, acts against sovereignty, began the week last with Cristiana Chamorro, and on Saturday it was Arturo Cruz’s turn. On Tuesday they arrested Juan Sebastián Chamorro, Félix Maradiaga, Violeta Granera and José Adán Aguerri, and on Wednesday José Bernard Pallais Arana.

That law, approved by the ruling majority Parliament in December 2020, prohibits Nicaraguans “who lead or finance a coup, alter the constitutional order, incite foreign interference and promote terrorist acts from running for popularly elected positions.”

Chamorro, daughter of former Nicaraguan President Violeta Barrios and opponent of the current Ortega government, was placed under house arrest and her home was raided by the police for five hours, said her brother Carlos Fernando Chamorro on his Twitter account.

According to a statement from the Public Ministry, Chamorro is accused of “abusive management, ideological falsehood in real competition with the crime of laundering money, property and assets to the detriment of the State of Nicaragua” during his administration against the dissolved Fundación Violeta Barrios . Arturo Cruz

The presidential candidate for the Citizen Alliance Arturo Cruz Sequeira was arrested on Saturday in Managua also as part of an investigation into alleged acts that threaten national sovereignty.

Jose Adán Aguerri

José Adán Aguerri, a well-known businessman in Nicaragua and former president of the Superior Council of Private Enterprise (Cosep), was arrested Tuesday night, according to a police statement.
