Suprêmes, the biopic on NTM: review and interview (video) – Sortaparis

After an exhibition in the center of Paris, a movie !
While NTM gave their last two concerts on November 22 and 23, 2019 at the Accor Arena in Paris, 30 years after the start of their career, the group is the subject of a biopic to discover at movie theater the November 24, 2021.

Entitled Supreme, this feature film whose filming took place from August 2020, is being produced by Audrey Estrougo (La Taularde). He focuses on the early years of the group, from its formation in 1988 to its first concert at the Zénith in Paris in 1992. Joeystarr and Kool Shen have also collaborated in the writing of the scenario.

Theo Christine (SKAM and The last wave) interprets the role of Joeystarr. That of Kool Shen is played by Sandor funtek (Worship, The last Parisians, Our wonderful lives). The two actors share the poster with Felix Lefebvre (Summer 85), Vini Vivarelli and Caesar Chouraqui (The origin of the violence).

Synopsis :

France, early 90s.
As increasingly violent clashes between the police and the suburbs rage, some choose hip-hop as an expression of their revolt. Two young people from Seine-Saint-Denis, Joeystarr and Kool Shen quickly become the spokespersons for a whole generation.
This is the birth of rap, the birth of a group: Supreme NTM.

If there is one thing that really stands out in Supreme, among many others, it is above all the play of the actors Theo Christine and Sandor funtek who interpret to perfection Joeystarr and Kool Shen. Anyone who has seen the two rappers on stage, in concert, will inevitably be struck by the accuracy of the gestures of the actors, but also of their phrasing.

Beyond a biography of the advent of the phenomenon Supreme NTM (originally a group of around thirty members), Supreme is also a fluoroscopy of its time. That of the end of the 80s and the beginning of the 90s and already of the social problems which plague France (one sees them in particular thanks to archival images of the news). The very ones that sings NTM in his words.

Yes Audrey Estrougo put a lot of rap in his movie, it is not the only musical genre that we hear there. Inked in his time, Supreme it’s also electro, West Indian music or punk with Hi to you of black berry. the movie shows a Kool Shen more serious and invested in music than his friend Joeystarr, him, more tormented and already very free electron. A childhood and youth that the singer reveals in his biography The Little Didier, which has just been published.
