Do you remember Winamp? He’s about to come back – Frandroid

The most famous multimedia player is about to make its comeback. It is already possible to register for the future beta.

Before the arrival of Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music and others, the music could be listened to on CD, vinyl or MP3. This is how some software enjoyed its heyday: media players. We can of course cite Windows Media Player or iTunes, the “default” software on Windows and Mac, but also Winamp, particularly appreciated thanks to its modular design, its many add-ons, but also and above all its skins. A website, Winamp Skin Museum, amuse himself by listing them.

The return of Winamp

The last software update dates from October 2018, it is version 5.8, but in 2018, Radionomy, the developer of the application, mentioned the big comeback of Winamp with a new version 6.0 enjoying a complete overhaul. Unfortunately, this resurrection never took place… Until now.

As spotted by the Slovak site Vosveteit, the Winamp.com site has just had a makeover. New design, new logo and a promise:

Something huge is happening. We are building Winamp for the next generation. Not just an update, but a total remaster. the
new Winamp connects you to your music wherever you are. It brings you closer to the artists you love. It houses your favorite music podcasts and radio stations.

For the curious, it is already possible to register to participate in the beta of this next Winamp. However, it is not specified when this will take place.

A streaming revolution?

The site does not specify what form this new Winamp will take, but we imagine that a multimedia player in 2021, at the time or the platforms of streaming have taken power, no longer makes much sense. It could therefore be a new platform competing with these giants.

The site also promises a space dedicated to artists and creators allowing to “broadcast their music to a whole new audience“, but also “bond with their fans and earn a fairer income“. It remains to be seen what form this will take.
