Francesco Clemente Giuseppe Sparanero, known under the stage name Franco Nero, was born on November 23, 1941 in the city of Parma in northern Italy. As a young man, he co-organized theatrical productions and sang in the local opera choir and jazz band. After high school, he studied economics in Milan for a short time, but left his university education and further developed his talent at the Piccolo Teatro di Milano.

In the early 1960s, he moved to Rome, where he began with smaller assignments. He entered the world of film with the drama Pelle viva (1962) and his first title role in the classic western story Django, in which Sergio Corbucci cast him in 1966, aroused the audience’s interest. During this period, he also appeared as Abel in the feature film The Bible. In 1967, he starred in the historical musical Camelot (1967). He received a Golden Globe nomination for his role as Knight Lancelot at King Arthur’s Court in the film version of this Broadway musical.

Together with Claudio Cardinale, he appeared in the mafia film The Day of the Owl (Il giorno della civetta), made by Italian director Damiano Damiani in 1968. Alongside Anthony Quinn, he performed as his faithful companion in the western studio Deaf Smith and Johnny Ears (Amigos, Los, 1973). In the adventurous film The White Fang (Zanna Bianca, 1973), based on the famous novel by Jack London, he embodied the brave journalist Jason Scott.

In 1975, Italian director Enzo G. Castellari gave him the opportunity to parody a spaghetti western called The Smell of Onions (Cipolla Colt). Nero’s performance as a grower and steadfast consumer of onions, with which he even struggles, still causes a smile on the face of the audience.

He gained a much more serious role in the Italian crime drama The Venerable People (Gente di rispetto, 1975). Under Castellari’s leadership, he played an Indian mixed race who performed bloody revenge on his enemies in Western Revenge (Keoma, 1976).

Despite his lack of English, he was part of British and American film productions, which represent The Virgin and the Gypsy (1970), Force 10 from Navarone (1978), and the action film White the Ninja (Enter the Ninja, 1981). .

German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder offered him the role of gay lieutenant Seblon in the film about human feelings and desires Querelle (1982). In 1987, Django Returns (Django 2: il grande ritorno) followed up on a hit from the 1960s. Alongside Bruce Willis, viewers could see him in the American thriller Deadly Trap 2 (Die Hard 2, 1990).

Nero not only played, but was also a co-author of Jonathan’s Revenge (Jonathan degli orsi, 1993), which was again directed by Castellari. Hungarian director Gábor Koltay gave him the opportunity to present himself in the historical dramas Honfoglalás (1996) and Sacra Corona (2001).

Jakubisko cast him in two films

In 2004, he starred as the seductive photographer Bakchus in a comedy full of sex, Post Coitum, directed by Juraj Jakubisek. He also cast him in the historical film Bathory (2008), where Nero portrayed King Matthias II. He also appeared in front of the camera in the German crime comedy Darling, I’m a Murderer (Mord ist mein Geschäft, Liebling, 2009) and in the American romantic comedy Letters to Juliet (Letters to Juliet, 2010). In 2012, he played in Djesterno Wild Django (Django Unchained) by Quentin Tarantino.

In recent years, he has been a part of films such as Otzi, The Man from the Ice (Der Mann aus dem Eis, 2017) and The Case of Collini (Der Fall Collini, 2019). During the international film festival Art Film Fest in Trenčianske Teplice, he won the Actor’s Mission award in 1995. At the Moscow International Film Festival in 2017, he received an award for his exceptional contribution to world cinema.

His fateful wife

His relationship with English actress Vanessa Redgrave began in 1966 when they met to shoot the film Camelot (1967). In 1969, they had a son, Carlo Gabriel Redgrave Sparanero, who is known professionally as Carlo Gabriel Nero and is currently a screenwriter and director.

After parting for many years, during which they both had relationships with other people (Nero dated actresses Catherine Deneuve, Goldie Hawn and Ursula Andress) they got back together and got married on December 31, 2006.
