TURIN – Norwegian tennis player Casper Ruud advanced to the semifinals in his first participation in the championship. In the final performance in the green group in a direct duel, he defeated the Andrej Rubľov as a Russian eighth after a three-hundred match 2: 6, 7: 5, 7: 6 (5). On Saturday, he will meet the winner of the red group, Rus Daniil Medvedev, in Turin. The highest-ranked Serb Novak Djokovic also succeeded in the third duel in the tournament, when he defeated the British Cameron Norrie smoothly 6: 2, 6: 1. German Alexander Zverev awaits him in the semifinals.

Ruud won the Rubľova scalp for the first time in his career, in the previous five mutual matches he pulled for a shorter end. The Russian player had the upper hand at the beginning of the match. Ruud lost the service at 1: 1 and Rubľov later used the second breakball. The last game in the first set was clear when Ruud failed in one exchange.

The fate of the second act was decided by the twelfth gem, in which Rubľov lost his second service in the match. In the fifth game of the third set, the Russian did not use the breakball that Norway “gave” him after a double mistake, but in the end he took the lead 3: 2. In the next game, however, he lost service and it was 3: 3. At 5: 5, Rublov did not change the breakball and the decision was made in the secretary, in which Ruud used the second swordball at 6: 5 thanks to an ace.

“He gives the strongest punches in the tournament and is very good at the first serve,” said about his opponent Ruud. “We all want to have the match under control, but it’s not easy against Rublov, because he will make you run and he has a good defense. I knew I had to go the same way, and I think I played sensibly.”

A Russian opponent is also waiting for him in the semifinals, while Medvedev has not lost in the tournament yet. “I’m already looking forward to tomorrow. It will be another challenging duel with another type of player, but one of the best in the world.” Norwegian added.
