TikTok, Biden revokes Trump’s ban

US President Joe Biden has decided to lift the ban imposed by his predecessor Donald Trump on the use of Chinese social networks TikTok and We Chat. Biden has decided to replace the three executive orders signed by Trump to ban the use of these social networks, in addition to other Chinese communications and finance applications. Biden approved orders are more general and are based on a set of criteria, rather than targeting specific applications or companies. The White House stressed that the Biden administration “is committed to promoting a secure, reliable, interoperable and open Internet, the protection of human rights ‘online’ and ‘offline’ and the support of the global and vibrant digital economy”. Thus, the ordinance passed by Biden incorporates a ‘rigorous’ decision-making framework according to a set of criteria and facts to address every risk posed by the country’s telecommunications “software” applications. According to the approved standard, the Commerce Department will have the task of formulating the recommendations necessary for the country to protect itself against any possible “damage” deriving from the sale, transfer or access to personal data, including identifying or genetic information.
