Apple Car: how Apple wants to revolutionize the electric car – Frandroid

A long Bloomberg article reveals a lot of information about Project Titan, Apple’s creation of an electric car. Design, software, processor, this is what we learn about the Apple Car.

Creation of a car by Apple and one of the oldest rumors around the apple brand. We can go back to 2015 on Frandroid to find the first mention of Project Titan, the name given to Apple’s plan to create its first marketable vehicle.

The journalist Mark Gurman, always well informed when it comes to Apple, gives us news of this project which seems to accelerate in the Californian offices.

Ambition on the rise: a 100% autonomous car

We learn that Apple wants to give the project a boost and redirect it towards construction. an autonomous vehicle. This is one of the goals of the entire auto industry, and it would be a great differentiator if Apple were to be one of the first brands to offer such a vehicle on a large scale.

It is Kevin Lynch, new leader of the project after having gone through the development of the software for the Apple Watch, who would like above all to offer a vehicle that would not require any intervention on the part of a human being. From the first version of the Apple Car, it should be able to go from point A to point B without touching the steering wheel. The design of the vehicle would be planned not to integrate either steering wheel or pedal and create an interior more welcoming and less focused on driving. One of the hypotheses would be an interior with the seats on the sides, like a limousine. For the multimedia system, Apple would obviously use a derivative of a very large screen iPad, in the middle of the vehicle. Apple’s dreams are one thing, regulation in the car market is another. Apple would therefore still prepare an emergency mode of “takeover” which would allow the use of a steering wheel.

Apple’s specialty is also the design of its own chips. The on-board computer has become a crucial subject when it comes to autonomous vehicles. Apple is said to have made great strides in designing the chip that would power the first Apple Car. Obviously, this chip would be based on the architecture that we already know with the M1 Max chip on MacBook, or the A Bionics on iPhone and iPad.

It is still hard to imagine Apple succeeding from its first car where Alphabet, Uber and especially You’re here have failed. The other two giants have also been working on the creation of autonomous vehicles for several years. We especially remember the vehicles Waymo Alphabet which are already circulating in complete autonomy in California on a small scale.

Launch targeted for 2025

For this very ambitious project, Apple would like to launch the first marketable vehicle in 2025. Suffice to say that this horizon is very close. Only four years to complete the development of a completely autonomous system, it seems hard to believe. Bloomberg specifies all the same that the marketing of a first generation with a less impressive technology is not completely excluded.

Another challenge for Apple: security. The firm has reportedly increased recruitment to ensure the safety of its vehicle. With Apple’s brand image so important, we can imagine that the company does not want to make the headlines for accidents involving one of its cars, like Tesla was able to do it. Maintaining the team in charge of the project would also be one of Apple’s difficulties. As Bloomberg reminds us, Project Titan has already had 5 chefs in just seven years.
