Controversial statement of a Czech scientist: Overcoming is a lesser risk for society! Arguments through the eyes of pharmacy

Karel Drbal is a Czech immunologist who came to the attention of the Slovak public after an interview for Czech Television. The video subsequently hit social networks and became viral within a few days. The reason is his statements about the vaccination, on which various groups of antivaxers began to rely. Drbal had to begin by answering why the much-vaccinated vaccination did not make a point behind the pandemic, which the immunologist said was a false presumption.

“If competent people did a timely analysis and read the original studies, they would know that vaccines were not made to prevent the spread of the virus.” Drbal said at the introduction. According to him, it was already visible during the spring wave that even the vaccinated can spread the virus further. He added that even such vaccinated countries as Israel and Singapore can no longer resist another wave. According to him, the statistics show that even the vaccinated can end up in the hospital and die of coronavirus, while those who overcame the coronavirus allegedly do not have such a problem. “Those who have survived the coronavirus are at much less risk to society and to themselves than those who have only been vaccinated.” Drbal stated, to which the moderator objected, that in the case of those who overcome the coronavirus, it must turn out well in the first place.

If the unvaccinated become infected, there is a relatively high risk that they will lose the fight against the coronavirus and die. The moderator wondered if Drbal saw any opportunity to increase interest in vaccinations in the Czech Republic, to which he replied that he thought that the current campaigns, which should motivate people to get vaccinated, would not have a significant impact. Subsequently, as an immunologist, he wondered what the purpose of vaccination was and whether other, alternative treatments for the infection were available. He added that, among other things, basic information on how doctors should treat coronavirus patients should be missing.

“I believe that coronavirus treatment exists, it practically existed from the beginning. By no means is it isoprinosine but corticosteroids. ” Drbal said. As he said, the coronavirus spreads through outbreaks and not through the community, and outbreaks need to be identified and targeted. He admitted that vaccination would help us gradually return to normal, but, in the delta variant, which is extremely infectious, there is no guarantee that it will protect people from a severe course or death. He concluded that in his opinion, the vaccine would never work 100% and estimated that it would rather be at 50 percent. “It’s normal vaccine efficacy, it’s not surprising,” concluded. In a few days, the video on the Youtube video platform has almost half a million views.

View through the eyes of pharmacy

The authors of the Eyes of Pharmacy project also looked at the whole thing, according to which several misleading information is given in the interview. And the very first misleading information was supposed to come from the moderator’s introductory question, when Drbala asked why the vaccine did not correct the coronavirus. “The original studies looked at whether the vaccine could prevent COVID-19, hospitalization and death. Studies have said nothing about the effect on the spread of the virus. However, no false assumptions have been made here. The researchers did not anticipate that the vaccines would also prevent the spread of coronavirus. On the contrary. The researchers said that caution should be exercised as the vaccine may not slow the virus at all and drapes will be needed. pointed out from the project that the information could be easily verified.

In addition, they pointed to another not entirely true statement of the immunologist. This concerned his opinion that it was already clear in the spring wave that the vaccinees could spread the virus. What’s more, in the spring, according to the eyes of Pharmacy, we learned exactly the opposite information – that those who became infected three weeks after vaccination were about half as likely to spread the infection. The authors of the project also commented on Drbal’s statement that highly vaccinated countries cannot defend themselves against the third wave. “It is true that both Israel and Singapore have been hit by a second wave, but that does not mean that vaccination is irrelevant. Singapore has seen 241,000 COVID-19 cases and 612 deaths since the start of the pandemic. The vaccination rate is 88%. On the other hand, our Slovakia, with a vaccination rate of 46%, had twice the number of COVID-19 cases and 22 times the number of victims (13,687 deaths) with a similar population. ” pointed out.

However, they do not think that those who have survived the coronavirus pose less risk to themselves and society. This is another Drbalo statement. Even if his words were true, there would still be a risk that those who would be infected with the coronavirus would not have to win the fight. However, according to the authors of the project, death is not the only inconvenience of the coronavirus, but also the so-called long covid or postcovide syndrome. After overcoming the virus, many had long-lasting symptoms of the infection, such as shortness of breath.

Through the eyes of pharmacy, they also looked at another statement – which concerns the administration of corticosteroids during coronavirus treatment. “Corticosteroids, such as dexamethasone, do help in the treatment of COVID-19. However, they are indicated by patientswhose condition requires oxygen treatment (from supportive care to artificial lung ventilation). Their use in non-hospitalized patients is not recommended. ” pointed out that anticoagulants are also not recommended in home treatment.

The current extremely critical situation, according to the eyes of pharmacy, is a huge problem, during which it is practically impossible to return to normal before a pandemic. Among other things, they shared a map of the COVID machine, where most districts are in black, the worst color, and the strictest rules and restrictions apply. Among other things, there are dozens of victims every day, which experts say are unnecessary because we have a vaccine here.

Another of Drbal’s statements is to be untrue – namely that the vaccinated are not protected from a difficult course or death. “Vaccination provides protection against the severe course of COVID-19 and also against death. It’s not 100%, but that doesn’t mean they don’t work at all. A sign that they work is the fact that 81.2% of hospitalized people are unvaccinated people, ” stated by the authors of the project.
