David Lisnard, mayor Les Républicains de Cannes (Alpes-Maritimes), was elected by his peers with 62% of the vote, Wednesday, November 17, at the head of the Association of Mayors of France (AMF). The councilor had been dubbed by the outgoing president François Baroin, who announced at the end of August that he would not seek a third term at the head of the association.

This support had displeased the secretary general of the AMF, Philippe Laurent, UDI mayor of Sceaux, in the Paris region, who then embarked on the race. A small revolution for the AMF, used to single-list ballots.

Beyond the personality of the two suitors, two opposite ways of approaching relations with Emmanuel Macron clashed: David Lisnard, anchored on the right, wanted to be the guarantor of “independent DNA” of the AMF which, according to him, characterized François Baroin’s seven-year mandate, while Philippe Laurent was more willing to dialogue with the executive.
