American journalist Danny Fenster freed after being detained for nearly six months in Burma

After one hundred and seventy-six days in prison, the American journalist Danny Fenster will return to the United States. He was released and was due to be expelled from the country, said on Monday (November 15th). to Agence France-Presse (AFP) a Burmese government source.

Mr. Fenster was pardoned “For humanitarian reasons” after negotiations with former US diplomat Bill Richardson and two Japanese envoys, the junta’s communications service said in a statement.

The head of American diplomacy, Antony Blinken, welcomed this release. “We are happy that Danny will be with his family soon and we continue to call for the release of others who are still unjustly imprisoned in Burma”, underlined the Secretary of State in a press release.

Sentenced to eleven years in prison

37-year-old journalist, who works for the magazine Myanmar border, was arrested on May 24 at Yangon international airport while trying to leave the country, and was being held near Rangoon, the economic capital, in Insein prison with many political prisoners. He was the first Western journalist to be detained for years in Burma. Other foreign journalists held by the junta were held for shorter periods, including American Nathan Maung, who was released in June, two weeks after Danny Fenster’s arrest. Beaten and deprived of water for several days during his interrogation, Mr. Maung believes American diplomacy allowed his release.
