Brief summary. Blah, blah, blah. What are the reactions to the Glasgow agreement? – SME.sk

GLASGOW. The UN climate summit (COP26) in Glasgow ended on Saturday with the adoption of a pact aimed at limiting dangerous temperature rises on the planet.

The agreement was reached despite recent interventions by China and India, and under their pressure, the Glasgow Pact did not commit itself to rejecting coal entirely, but only to deviating from it.

The Glasgow Climate Pact “reaffirms” the goals of the Paris Agreement of 2015: “to keep global temperature rises well below 2 degrees Celsius” and “to continue efforts to limit temperature rises to 1.5 degrees Celsius”.

What are the reactions to the summit results?

Boris Johnson, British Prime Minister

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson He called the pact adopted by delegates at the UN Climate Conference (COP26) in Glasgow on Saturday a “big step forward”. However, he also pointed out that much more needed to be done.

“Much more needs to be done in the coming years,” Johnson said after the conference, which ended on Saturday.

“However, today’s agreement is a big step forward and – in principle – we have the first ever international agreement to phase out coal and move to keep global temperatures rising to 1.5 degrees Celsius,” he said.

Johnson also thanked world leaders, delegates and others via Twitter for contributing to the pact. He also thanked the chairman of the climate conference, Alok Sharm.

António Guterres, head of the UN

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said he considered the agreements reached insufficient.

“The outcome of COP26 is a compromise that reflects the interests, contradictions and level of political will (to solve the climate problem) in today’s world,” he wrote on twitter.

According to the UN head, this is an important step, but it is also necessary to act quickly. “Fighting the climate is our life’s work and we must succeed,” Guterres added.

Ursula von der Leyen, head of the EC

According to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the COP26 conference is a “step in the right direction” and maintaining a global temperature rise of up to 1.5 degrees Celsius is still within reach.

“However, the work is far from finished,” she added. According to her, the Glasgow promises need to be implemented as soon as possible and then set further goals.

Greta Thunberg, activist

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg said the UN Climate Summit (COP26) in Glasgow, which ended on Saturday, “has achieved nothing.

“COP26 is over. Here’s a brief summary: Blah, blah, blah,” Thunberg wrote on Twitter. According to her, real work continues outside such meeting rooms. “We will never give up,” she added.

Thunberg also criticized the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow on 5 November.
