Test: Hyundai Ioniq 5 – electric car as from a sci-fi movie – PRAVDA.sk

The Ioniq 5 uses a revolutionary 800-volt electrical architecture, has a larger wheelbase than the Mercedes E-Class and travels up to 460 kilometers on a single charge. In addition, it can accelerate to 100 in 5.2 seconds.

This year was supposed to be a turning point in terms of electric car sales, and in Slovakia they were finally to establish themselves in some more fundamental way. But everything is different. The coronary crisis ensued, followed by the chip crisis, if the state’s lack of interest in a more massive expansion of electromobility in the form of meaningful subsidies for the purchase of electric cars persists.

The result is therefore the current sad state. According to the Association of the Automotive Industry, 817 electric cars were sold in Slovakia in the first ten months of this year. This is only 1.27 percent of total car sales. At a time when electric cars in the rest of Europe are talking about car sales in a fundamental way. For example, in September it was the best-selling car in the whole of Europe, regardless of the type of electric drive – specifically the Tesla Model 3. We can only dream of something like this in Slovakia.

But at least this year is a turning point in our country as well. Over the last ten months, completely new generation electric cars have come to the market, which have already been invented, designed and constructed as purely electric. The electrical technologies in them are optimized for the longest possible range and the fastest possible charging. One of them is the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which also looks like he’s set out on a journey straight from some science fiction movie.

A completely different league

Ioniq 5 is built on a revolutionary new platform designed exclusively for electric cars, working with an 800-volt system that allows ultra-fast charging. It is one of the biggest “highlights” of Ioniqu 5, so let’s start with it. The basis of the car is the electric architecture E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform), which, similarly to Porsche Taycan, supports the already mentioned charging infrastructure with a voltage of 800 V.

This means, for example, that with an ultra-fast charger you can charge this car from 10 to 80 percent in about 20 minutes. And it’s not just the declared value, we actually managed to recharge it repeatedly during this test.

Thanks to the V2L system, a charged car for a change can also be used as a mobile charger, for example to power electric boats or camping accessories, with a power input of 3.6 kW. One V2L connector is located under the second row of seats, the other with the charging connector on the outside of the vehicle. It provides energy even when the vehicle is switched off.

The declared combined range of the Ioniqu 5 is 460 kilometers with 19-inch wheels and 430 kilometers with larger 20-inch wheels. This, of course, depends on the route profile, your driving style and speed. For example, on the highway at speeds above the permitted highway limits, we moved with consumption just below the 30 kWh limit. So with a fully charged Ioniq 5, you can cover about 250 kilometers on it.

On the contrary, in districts and with a lighter foot on the gas and in compliance with the regulations, you can even reach a diameter below 17 kWh. And that’s a really admirable figure for such a big and heavy car with an curb weight of over two tons. With this consumption, you “do” with the car on a single charge about 430 kilometers. This electric ATV has a declared average according to the WLTP measuring cycle of 19 kWh. The range also depends on the rate of use of recuperation, its intensity can be regulated by levers under the steering wheel.

Ioniq is available with a battery with two capacities – they have either 58 or 72.6 kWh. We tested the highest – and most expensive – 4×4 version. It was equipped with a pair of electric motors and a stronger battery, a weaker quad is not available.

In this case, the Ioniq 5 has a total output of 225 kW and 305 hp, respectively, plus a maximum torque of 350 Nm on the rear and 255 Nm on the front electric motor. The quad equipped in this way achieves acceleration that is already close to high-performance sports cars – 5.2 seconds is enough for a hundred. Its maximum speed is electrically limited to 180 kilometers per hour.
