A terrible accident left two dead and two very serious injuries on the departmental road 654 between Mauvezin and Cologne, in the town of Saint-Georges, this Sunday morning shortly before 11:30 am. According to the first elements communicated by the Parquet d’Auch, the black Seat Ibiza, with three young people on board, crashed into the gray Picasso C4 of a 56-year-old driver while she was overtaking a third vehicle. The shock, almost frontal, occurred in the middle of a straight line, on a cleared road, and dry at the time when the facts occurred.

As soon as the alert was given, an important safety and emergency device was put in place by the gendarmerie and the firefighters. Many machines converged from the centers of Cologne, Gimont, Mauvezin, L’Isle-Jourdain and Auch, towards the scene of the tragedy.

The two vehicles, crushed, were entangled in the ditch, the Seat Ibiza very severely deformed by the impact. While the gendarmes of the L’Isle-Jourdain, Gimont and Mauvezin brigades secured the area, blocking the passage upstream and downstream of the accident, nearly 30 firefighters were on site. They received the support of the Smur 32 teams and two Smur 31 helicopters, intended to evacuate the hardest hit victims.

Heavy toll

Two young men, one 21 and the other 25, passengers in the Seat Ibiza, were in fact in critical condition when help arrived. But they could not do anything to save them. Another victim, in absolute urgency, had to be stabilized first before being evacuated. This 20-year-old girl, the driver of the Seat Ibiza, seriously injured, was taken to the Purpan University Hospital by helicopter. The motorist behind the wheel of the Picasso C4, classified by the emergency services as “relative urgency”, took his place in the 2nd aircraft for the same destination. It is not known where the victims came from. The Mauvezin DDI services then intervened to put the road back in order.

Present alongside the rescuers, the local elected officials were perplexed. Philippe Dupouy, departmental advisor in Gimone-Arrats, and particularly in charge of roads, knows this axis well. “Nearly 6,000 vehicles pass there per day. But there are not so many accidents. And here, the straight line does not present any particular danger. The mayor of Saint-Georges, Monique Messegué, is sorry when she finds out about the human toll. “There is sometimes such unconsciousness on the part of the drivers… On a straight line like that, a little moment of inattention is enough. “

The gendarmerie investigation, led by the L’Isle-Jourdain brigade, should shed light on the causes of the accident. This drama brings the number of deaths on the roads of the Gers to 9 in 2021.
