The summit is over, they have adopted the Glasgow Climate Pact – Diary N

The UN Climate Conference in Glasgow ended with the adoption of the Glasgow Climate Pact. Even after taking into account all national plans and promises, it is not realistic to bring global warming below the critical limit of 1.5 degrees. According to the Pact, countries have a year to come up with new emission reduction strategies.

Almost 200 countries have agreed on the way forward in the fight against climate change. They agreed to a gradual move away from using coal to generate electricity.

However, the wording of the commitment was weakened at the last minute under pressure from China and India, and instead of the original total discard of coal, there is only talk of “diversion”. Many delegates expressed disappointment at the concession, but for the “higher good” they eventually voted in favor of the pact.

Summary of points agreed at COP26:

  • To keep global warming below 1.5 degrees, global greenhouse gas production needs to be reduced by 45 percent by 2030 compared to 2010 and to a net zero in emissions around the middle of the century.
  • Some countries have pledged to reverse the world’s declining forests by 2030. More than 100 countries have joined the statement, including Brazil and Indonesia, which are home to most of the world’s tropical rainforests.
  • Countries have agreed to a gradual move away from using coal to generate electricity.
  • They have pledged to reduce methane emissions by 30 percent by 2030 compared to 2020. Together, these countries account for more than 70 percent of the world’s gross domestic product and half of all gas emissions.
  • The agreement “regrets” states that rich countries have not fulfilled their promise to contribute $ 100 billion a year to poor regions by 2020 for climate change measures. The agreement urges rich countries to make this commitment by 2025.
  • The “notes with concern” the growing costs of developing countries, in particular due to the effects of climate change and increased indebtedness due to the pandemic.
  • A group of countries, including Britain, Poland, Turkey and India, along with companies such as Ford and General Motors, have stated that they want to have only zero-emission vehicles on the new car market by 2040. (n, čtk)
