The epidemic situation is currently “very worrying” in ten countries of the European Union. The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said on Friday that the situation was deteriorating across Europe.

ECDC updates the list of countries at risk from an epidemiological point of view on a weekly basis. Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland and Slovenia have now placed the most risky category, the AFP agency writes.

The ECDC also said that the “overall epidemic situation” in recent days was characterized by a high and rapidly rising number of infections and a “low but slowly increasing mortality rate”.

According to the ECDC, at the same time, the rate of infections, deaths and hospitalizations, including those in intensive care units, is expected to increase in the next two weeks. “Countries with the lowest vaccination rates continue to be most affected,” added by ECDC.

Germany is on the list of countries with the second worst, “very worrying” situation, as well as Slovakia and Austria. France, along with Cyprus and Portugal, ended up on the list of countries with a “slightly worrying” situation.

By contrast, Italy, Malta, Spain and Sweden have been included in the low risk list. It is in these countries that vaccination is the highest in the EU.

Approximately 50 percent of both cases and deaths are expected to rise in the next two weeks, the ECDC said. He adds that the seven-day incidence – the number of infected per 100,000 population in the last seven days – should reach 300, while in the case of deaths it would reach 2.7.
