The embassies of Italy, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States in Libya have urged the authorities and institutions in view of the elections scheduled for next 24 December. In a note released in the last few hours, the embassies recall the resolution 2570 of the UN Security Council, which appeals to the Libyan authorities and institutions, including the government of national unity and the House of Representatives, to facilitate the elections of 24 December 2021 and to agree on the constitutional and legal basis for voting by 1 July. “In addition to the provisions at the political and security level, preparations at the technical and logistical level will be crucial”, reads the note in which the embassies say they believe that “this is not the time for disruptive changes in the competent bodies”. But the Libyan High Council of State dismisses the statement from the embassies of Italy, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the US as “interference in Libya’s internal affairs”. This is what we read in a note relaunched by the Libya Observer, in which “great amazement” comes from the High Council of State for the reference in the text to the fact that “the current moment is not adequate for changes in the positions that have to do with the organization of elections in Libya “. “The violation of Libyan sovereignty is not only linked to the presence of foreign mercenaries on the ground, but also to attempts at external political diktats that are categorically rejected”, the note also reads. The High Council of State affirms “the need to hold elections on schedule”, that is to say next December 24, “on solid constitutional foundations” and “reaffirms the independence of the Libyan decision”. Tripoli also asks the “ambassadors of foreign governments not to go beyond their prerogatives, to respect the diplomatic norms and laws of the host State”.
