The Netherlands recorded a record daily increase in coronavirus infections on Thursday. The Dutch government is considering introducing new measures, including a “slight lockdown”, to slow the spread of the virus, AFP reported. According to the Institute of Public Health (RIVM), 16,364 new infected people have registered in the Netherlands in the last 24 hours, which is the highest since the beginning of the pandemic. The record of December 20 last year was thus surpassed, with 12,997 more cases per day in the country.

The Dutch consortium of experts on Thursday proposed to the government to introduce the first ever partial lockdown in Western Europe since this summer. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte will hold a press conference on Friday to announce the new measures, with local media expecting the government to declare a “slight lockdown” on the recommendation of a panel of experts. Measures may also include the cancellation of mass events, the closing of cinemas and theaters, as well as the earlier closing hours of restaurants and bars.
