Microsoft Surface Duo 2 review: slightly better than its predecessor

9

In partnership with Philips, 10 of our readers are reviewing the new Fidelio L3 headphones. After several days of testing, here are their first opinions on the design and ergonomics of this model.

Gaëtan Wurtz, Strasbourg (67)

Rather light, the helmet is still designed with noble materials that have made the reputation of the Fidelio series.

Gaëtan Wurtz

Owner of the first headset in the Philips Fidelio nomadic audiophile range, this test of the last L3 representative allows me to judge whether this model has evolved. From the opening, the packaging gives an impression of seriousness with a case comprising little wasted space. In addition to the headset, it contains a leather pouch (with its maintenance instructions), a flexible pouch, instructions for use and various connectors: a jack cable, an airplane adapter and a USB Type-C charger. Rather light, the helmet is still designed with noble materials that have made the reputation of the Fidelio series. We find in particular high-end leather and an anthracite aluminum finish for the most beautiful effect for the hoop.

On the other hand, it is unfortunate that the pads are covered with the same faux leather as on the previous iterations. Although very comfortable, they have an annoying tendency to wear out too quickly under the effect of heat, which also promotes a suction effect. As for the design, it largely takes the aesthetics of the Philips X3. We could regret its too modern lines, where the previous models stood out with a more retro imprint. The controls are limited to three buttons: power on, noise reduction mode and voice assistance. They are unfortunately devoid of relief, which would have made it possible to differentiate them to the touch. It is also possible to navigate between the tracks and adjust the volume via a touch surface located on the shells. Although a little confusing because of a slight lack of responsiveness, it is ultimately rather effective in use, provided you have clean fingers. Finally, an indicator light indicates that the helmet is working properly.

Dylan Boucher, Saint-Malo (35)

Leather ear cushions with memory foam further enhance the perceived quality.

Dylan Boucher

The helmet is presented in a fairly well finished leather carrying case. It also has a mesh compartment that contains audio and USB-C charging connectors. The helmet makes a good impression at first glance, thanks in particular to the hoop covered in leather, as well as an aluminum part which conforms to the shape of the ear cups. Although made of plastic, the latter seem to be of good quality. This model incorporates three control buttons, an audio jack and USB-C connectivity for charging. Leather cushions with memory foam further enhance the perceived quality.

Despite its rather imposing size, the design of the helmet, made of noble materials, is sober and goes everywhere. In use, its consequent weight is completely forgotten. The fairly ample ear cups easily adapt to the shape of the skull and are relatively comfortable. The arch is felt without being annoying, at least not before a certain time of use. The touch controls are very sensitive and there is a slight latency for the function to be performed. The headset can be connected fairly easily to your devices, provided you have pressed the Power button for 5 s and waited for the LED to alternate from white to blue. The support of the headset by the app is quite easy.

Wilfried Halley, Conflans-Sainte-Honorine (78)

The Fidelio L3 is a good helmet with an exemplary finish.

The packaging is a pretty plastic-free box with a nice drawer opening to discover the helmet in its case. In leather and with a semi-rigid structure, this one is of good quality, but be careful, because leather marks very easily. Inside, there are the headphones and cords for charging and wired use. Compared to the standing of this model, I find the charging cord too short and the jack cord too thin. The finish of the helmet is impeccable with noble materials, including metal for the arch and premium leather for the pads. The look is understated, but it lacks a bit of personality.

The touch controls are easy to learn. Only downside for the Play / Pause that I sometimes accidentally activate when I adjust the volume or change songs. Helmet support on the head is very good with super efficient compression when in motion. The pads are perfectly sealed to outside noise, but they make the ears warm. The Fidelio L3 is a good helmet with an exemplary finish. It just lacks originality in its look.

Régis Ollivier, Gallargues-le-Montueux (30)

We can say that Philips has taken a lot of care in the design and manufacture of this new headset.

The product is delivered in a simple and qualitative packaging. It includes a zipped and rigid carrying pouch on the sides to protect the headset and accessories: a 3.5 to 2.5 mm jack cable, an airplane adapter, a USB-C cable for power and mode. use. Getting started with the headset is very easy. Remember to press the ON button for a long time to start pairing. The recognition was immediate on all my devices (smartphones, PC and Mac computers). At first glance, we can see that Philips has made an effort on the materials, including a beautiful aluminum headband with leather on the top and a foam inside which improves the comfort on the head. The all-aluminum rotary joint between the hoop and the outside of the pads looks very sturdy.

Compared to other nomadic headsets that I have been able to test in the past, it is a bit heavy, but this is undoubtedly due to the materials and the on-board electronics. Using the headset is very easy. Small flat concerning the not very intuitive touch controls. You have to start your finger from the center of the pad, otherwise you risk pausing instead of playing the song or changing the volume. In the end, I keep my habits by using the commands via my smartphone instead. We can say that Philips has taken a lot of care in the design and manufacture of this new headset. The choice of materials and the assembly are impeccable.

Olivier Savey, Drumettaz-Clarafond (73)

The helmet therefore provides an impression of premium quality reinforced by a really very appreciable comfort and a fairly intuitive ergonomics.

Olivier Savey

From the first glance, the Fidelio L3 gives off an impression of quality, starting with the particularly well-designed leather carrying case. The accessories (USB-C charging cable, jack cable and airplane adapter) are stored in a small “net” which keeps them very well in place. The helmet exudes quality. A feeling reinforced by the imposing weight and the materials used: metal, leather, plastic and fabric of good quality. It enjoys a premium design, but discreet. The pads are very enveloping and provide a feeling of comfort. Ditto for the headband which remains very comfortable even during long listening sessions. Used to Bluetooth products, I had no difficulty putting the headphones on. All the controls integrated on the ear cups are easily accessible, moreover.

Regarding the touch functions, the gestures are quite intuitive: movement up or down to increase or decrease the volume, to the right to advance one title, to the left to return to the previous title, etc. As for the wired connection, nothing could be simpler with a plug for the source and another for the headphones. Overall, the handling is intuitive, even if I tend to press too hard on the right ear cup and very often pause my music instead of changing the title! The helmet therefore provides an impression of premium quality reinforced by a really very appreciable comfort and a fairly intuitive ergonomics.

Cédric De Bossoreille, Paris (75)

From the first use, the primary controls fall to hand and react perfectly: volume, next track, pause, etc. A faultless!

The opening of a new product is always a special moment, and that of the Fidelio L3 is no exception. A box that contains another more sober, deep blue and reminiscent of the premium potential of the helmet. After opening the drawer, we discover a protective cover that encloses the helmet. A few thoughtful accessories come with the device, including an airplane adapter, a USB-C cable and a mini-jack cable. When you get started, you immediately notice the build quality and the robustness of the product. It seems a bit heavy for my taste, but it’s worth checking in the long run.

The ergonomics are quite intuitive with a single Power On button on the left side and two more on the right side. This makes it possible to avoid possible handling errors. Very pleasant surprise when switching on with a Bluetooth connection which starts automatically and displays a pop-up with the image of the Fidelio L3 headset directly on the screen of my phone (Android). It only takes one click to get everything up and running! The adjustment of the helmet on the head is a little difficult, because the notches of the rollbar are difficult to pass. The hold, neither too loose nor too strong, is however very pleasant. From the first use, the primary controls fall to hand and react perfectly: volume, next track, pause, etc. A faultless!

to summarize

Our readers’ first contact with the Philips Fidelio L3 headphones is clearly positive. Unboxing the product and discovering the protective leather cover, accessories and the helmet itself were a pleasant surprise to them. All of them underlined the quality of manufacture, the robustness, the sober and discreet design, or the quality of the premium materials used (leather, aluminum, memory foam, etc.). None of our readers have complained about a missing accessory or any problem, which is rare enough to be reported. They particularly appreciate the comfort of the helmet which offers perfect support in all circumstances. And if we had to look for the little beast, difficult to find it so much this model of helmet seems to have seduced them. The Bluetooth connection, which is done in a jiffy, even simply amazed our participants. See you in a few days to discover the opinions of our readers on the features and sound quality of the Philips Fidelio L3 headphones.
