LONDON – Steven Gerrard has become the new coach of Aston Villa footballers. He replaced Dean Smith on the bench of the 16th English Premier League team, whose leadership was called off after five consecutive losses.

Gerrard arrives at Aston Villa of the Glasgow Rangers, with whom he became Scottish champion last season. He premieres as the coach of the Birmingham team after a national team break in the home game with Brighton (November 20).

“Aston Villa is a club with a rich history and tradition in English football. I am extremely proud to have become its new head coach.” Gerrard declared. “It was clear what the club’s ambitious plans are. I’m already looking forward to helping it achieve its goals.” AFP quoted the new helmsman.

Forty-one-year-old Gerrard has been coaching the Glasgow Rangers since June 2018. He has had an almost exclusive playing career with FC Liverpool, where he has spent seventeen seasons and played a total of over 500 matches. With the club from Anfield, he won the Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup, on the domestic scene he twice enjoyed a FA Cup triumph and three times the League Cup. He also has 114 national team starts and 21 goals.
