MINSK – Alexandra Romanovska, world champion in acrobatic ski jumping, was detained in Belarus and opposed the regime of President Alexander Lukashenko after last year’s re-election. Reuters, referring to local media, said the reason for the arrest of the 25-year-old Olympian was an unspecified administrative offense.

Police detained Romanovska on Wednesday evening on the way home from training. The premier world champion from Deer Valley is currently at the police station in Minsk.

Romanov is one of the signatories of an open protest letter to which more than 2,000 representatives of Belarusian sports condemned last year’s presidential election. Like other protesters, they called them manipulated, which Lukashenko denies.

Former decathlon fighter Andrei Kravchenko and basketball player Jelena Levchenko have ended up in jail over protests against the Belarusian dictator. Others lost their jobs or their place in the national team.

At the Olympic Games in Tokyo, the runner Kristína Cimanovská left the Belarusian team under dramatic circumstances, who was forced by the coaches to leave early after the dispute. Cimanovska was afraid to return to her homeland and found asylum in Poland, which she wants to represent in the future.
