President: If Fico really wanted a referendum, he would consult with constitutional lawyers – SME.sk

BRATISLAVA The President and the Office of the President are not legal counsel. If the chairman of the party Smer Robert Fico indeed, it was a referendum, he would consult with lawyers and set the issues differently. The president said this on the show Braňo Závodský live on Rádio Expres Zuzana Caputova.

“It is a game of interest in the referendum. It is irresponsible, as it stirs up passions, “said the president, who also takes Fico’s actions as an attack on her person.

“I highly recommend that in the future, anyone who will want to prepare questions for the people for the referendum, please consult with lawyers,” the president added.

The questions violated the law

The head of state said that he respects the 600,000 people who signed a petition in the spring for a referendum on a question that was later Constitutional Court declared unconstitutional.

In the present case, she considered it fair and fair to state at the outset of the new process that the two issues under which signatures would be collected are interdependent. At the same time, the law clearly states that the issues in the referendum must not be conditioned.

In October, the Smer presidency approved the wording of the questions for a petition to hold a referendum on early elections. The party then turned to President Zuzana Čaputová with questions, asking them to state whether they would turn to the Constitutional Court with two referendum questions or to approve a referendum.

The reforms pay for the conflicts in the coalition

The president added that failing to push through any reform was a huge problem. The coalition has so far failed to approve the reform of the judiciary, hospitals or national parks.

“Millions of euros from the Recovery Plan are tied to reforms. I would therefore quote Mr Matovič (Igor Matovič, Minister of Finance), who said that if we did not have it, let’s get away with it, “said the President, who does not understand that there is a government in Slovakia that has the legitimacy of elections, to rule, it has good people with good intentions, but it is extremely burdened by mutual conflicts to such an extent that they have failed to push through a single reform.

The president said that she had already called the chairmen of the coalition parties for discussions.

“I am in contact with individual members of the government and representatives of political parties. From an external point of view, what the citizen is facing is that we are in crisis and have a quarrelsome government, “said Čaputová.
