Why Kheira Hamraoui’s assault reminds some of Tonya Harding’s story

SPORT – The women’s section of PSG is in awe after the assault last week on Kheira Hamraoui, French international victim of a violent ambush, a troubled affair in which her teammate Aminata Diallo was arrested this Wednesday, November 10.

Last Thursday, the two players returned together from a dinner, with Diallo at the wheel. The vehicle was stopped and Hamraoui got out of the car to be “beaten up in the legs with an iron bar” by two men who then fled, according to the Versailles prosecutor, taking up Hamraoui’s story. The player had been taken to hospital for stitches. Diallo, she would have been retained by the attackers, but not victim of physical violence herself, specified to AFP a source within the PSG.

This news item has since been taken up by several international titles, whose New York Times, who compare it to the assault on American skater Nancy Kerrigan in 1994.

That year, the young woman was the victim of an assault in a plot orchestrated by the ex-husband of a rival skater, Tonya Harding.

Baton blows in the legs

Nancy Kerrigan had been assaulted after a training session by a man who repeatedly hit her in the legs with a police baton.

After Nancy Kerrigan was forced to withdraw from the Championships United States Due to her injuries, Tonya Harding won the competition and secured a spot on the 1994 US Olympic team.

Nancy Kerrigan was then eventually named to the team, and several weeks later, she won the silver medal at the Lillehammer Olympics. Tonya Harding, who had long denied being involved in the attack but pleaded guilty to obstructing prosecution, finished eighth. The scandal was revived in 2017 with the release of a fictional biopic, Me, Tonya.
