Healthcare in the Žilina Region is due to the increase in patients with covid before collapse, Erika Jurinová, the mayor, warned. Beds with artificial lung ventilation are 100 percent full and hospitals have been moving critically ill patients to other regions for two weeks now. However, transport is becoming increasingly difficult as capacity is filled extremely quickly.

The total capacity of the beds is more than 80 percent full.

Only for the last day in hospitals all over Slovakia the number of patients with covid increased by 297 to 2,405 and 45 more deaths.

They have low vaccinations

Jurinová pointed out that the vaccination rate in the region is at the level of 44 percent, which is reflected in the critical state of hospitalizations in hospitals.

“We have set up a large-scale vaccination center and an epidemiological outpatient clinic where we vaccinate. Our outbound vaccination line has so far vaccinated in 116 villages. The region is trying to keep healthcare ‘alive’. But at the same time, it informs the public that the current state of health care is about to collapse, “said Jurinová.

Transfer issues

According to the director of the health department of the Žilina Region Office, Silvia Pekarčíková, they coordinate the transport of patients not only on artificial lung ventilation.

“We have already transported at least 10 patients on oxygen. Transfers are extremely challenging for patients in terms of health risk. The way is not to transport the patient, but to the hospital available as soon as possible, where they will treat him, stabilize his health condition and cure him. Hospitals are trying to accommodate us, but we have already had the first problem transferring the patient to another region. This situation should help the population to understand that hospitals are not inflatable and people are not flashlights, “said Pekarčíková.

A more devastating wave

Martin Šenfeld, director of the Kysuce Hospital with a polyclinic in Čadca, pointed out that the third wave is more devastating than the second wave.

“It happens that the patient’s condition deteriorates very quickly after admission and ends up in artificial lung ventilation. Rather, the patients are younger than in the second wave and we also had hospitalized children, “he said.

According to medical director Dalibor Murgaš, the University Hospital in Martin is concentrating pediatric patients with moderate and severe covid from all over the region.
