An Apple-1 computer, one of the company’s first, goes on sale and is expected to fetch $ 600,000 at auction.

(CNN Business) – One of Apple’s first computers is up for auction and could sell for up to $ 600,000.

The Apple-1, which will be auctioned on Tuesday, is one of the few surviving copies of Apple’s first computer in the world, according to John Moran Auctioneers.

The bundle includes an Apple-1 “NTI” motherboard and an Apple cassette adapter in a koa wood box, as well as a Datanetics Rev D keyboard, a 1986 Panasonic video monitor, an Apple-1 connection cable and a power supply, the listing says.

It also comes with an Apple-1 Basic Manual, Apple-1 Operation Guide, an original MOS 6502 Programming Manual, and two Apple-1 software cassette tapes.

The computer was designed by Steve Wozniak and assembled and tested by Steve Jobs.

The Apple-1 for sale has only had two owners. This particular specimen was purchased by an electronics teacher, who later sold it to a student in 1977, the auctioneer said.

Apple only 200 computers of this type.

“This Apple-1 has recently undergone an extensive authentication, restoration and evaluation process by one of the leading experts in the field, who inspected all components and generated a full status report for the Apple-1.” said the auctioneer.

Only six copies of the Apple-1 koa wood box remain, according to the auction house. The wood has become rarer and more expensive as the number of koa trees has been reduced due to cattle grazing and logging.

Only 200 Apple-1s were made in total, and 175 were sold.

Fifty of the 175 computers were sold to Paul Terrell, who owns a store called ByteShop in Mountain View, California, the auctioneer says.

The current owner of the Apple-1 bought this computer in 1977.

Terrell was reportedly disappointed when they were delivered because he was expecting a self-contained computer unit that was ready to be plugged in, according to the auctioneers.

However, Jobs appeased him by saying that each box contained all the elements to make a fully functioning computer, and ByteShop could make money selling the product.

In 2013, a rare working model of the Apple-1 sold for more than $ 671,000 at auction in Germany.

The computer was sold along with a letter from Apple co-founder Jobs to its original owner.

Jobs and Wozniak created the famous Apple computer in the Jobs family’s garage, built the device by hand, and financed the company through the sale of Wozniak’s fancy calculator and Jobs’s VW camper.

Apple is now one of the most valuable companies in the world, worth about $ 2.5 trillion.
