WhatsApp “Communities”: a new function that would attack Discord – Frandroid

New evidence of a “Communities” feature relating to WhatsApp has resurfaced. It would make it possible to create a sub-group in a group discussion.

WhatsApp has multiple projects under development to provide new functionalities and optimize its user experience. Among them, let us quote for example deleting your very old messages, the arrival of reactions to the Messenger and the possibility of choosing which sees the time of your last connection.

The platform of Meta (the new name of the Facebook group) is working on another even more muscular project: it has the ambition to integrate a system of communities, which XDA Developers already highlighted in early October. This time, it’s the specialist’s turn WABetaInfo to bring new elements.

Sub-groups

The “Communities” function – which we will call this if it does not have another name – wishes to give more “powers” to the administrators of a group. These people could then create a sub-group within a group conversation. A bit like Discord.

To do this, it would be possible for them to create a community link by way of invitation. By clicking on it, a user would then have access to a smaller group of exchanges. This type of use could for example be used for a family discussion, where aunts, uncles, cousins, parents and grandparents are all gathered.

Cousins ​​might well wish to create a sub-conversation to discuss a more specific subject with each other, or for the sheer pleasure of meeting up with a little virtual cousin.

As of this writing, we don’t know what this new feature will look like or how it would fit into WhatsApp. WABetaInfo However, note two things: conversations linked to the “Communities” function will also be end-to-end encrypted.

Also, a visual clue would allow us to locate the Communities of other conversations: the discussion icon would opt for a square format with rounded corners. WhatsApp had mistakenly revealed it in October, before quickly deactivating everything.

Finally, we obviously do not know when the service plans to deploy this novelty for its 2 billion monthly active users.
