A police officer was attacked, Monday, November 8, with a stab in front of the Cannes police station by a man indicating to act “in the name of the prophet”, seriously hit by retaliatory fire, according to police sources who are considering the terrorist trail.

“Victim of a stabbing, the police officer was fortunately not physically injured, thanks to his bulletproof vest,” Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Twitter. “The terrorist trail is being considered,” a police source told AFP.

Around 6:30 am, in front of the Cannes police station, the man hastily opened the door of a parked police vehicle and stabbed a first police officer “in the chest”, before going around the vehicle. to attack “the captain”, said this source. Another police officer then seriously injured him with two retaliatory shots and his life-threatening prognosis is in jeopardy.

Two other police officers were slightly hit by shrapnel from the colleague, according to these police sources.

According to one of them, the attacker is a 37-year-old Algerian national unknown to the police and intelligence services. The Nice judicial police were seized.

“I am going there immediately this morning and I give all my support to the national police and to the city of Cannes”, also indicated on Twitter Gerald Darmanin.

Since the start of Emmanuel Macron’s five-year term, France has been hit by seventeen Islamist attacks.

Attack at Rambouillet

The last dates back to April 23, 2021 at the Rambouillet police station, where a 36-year-old Tunisian national fatally stabbed an Interior Ministry official.

Thirty-six attacks have been foiled since the start of the five-year term, including 3 in 2021, according to the authorities.

Since 2015, a wave of jihadist attacks has left more than 260 dead in France.

Several of these attacks were carried out with knives and targeting the police, in accordance with the recurring slogans of the jihadist group Islamic State (IS).

“Solidarity and support for all the police officers at the Cannes police station, and particularly for the victim of this attack. Our support for the police must never weaken, they risk their lives every day to protect ours!”, said for his part the president (LR) of the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur region, Renaud Muselier.

The mayors of Cannes and Nice, David Lisnard and Christian Estrosi have expressed their “support” for the police.
