Money transfers and repatriation of illegal migrants: outcry on the left after Montebourg’s proposal – LCI

“There are 11 billion money transfers that pass through Western Union to all countries of origin. It is a windfall for these countries and we need today to say: enough is enough”. Invited this Sunday, November 7 by the Grand Jury, on LCI, Arnaud Montebourg proposed to freeze the sending of private funds to countries that would refuse to bring back to their soil individuals in an irregular situation in France.

The proposal sparked a huge outcry on the left of the French political spectrum, starting with Jean-Luc Mélenchon, one of his main rivals in the race for the Élysée. “Montebourg, it would be a cruel mistake to prohibit the transfer of wages to the family in the country of origin in the name of the bad actions of the governments”, believes the leader of France Insoumise, calling not to venture “on this murky ground”.

For Senator Rachid Temal (PS), Arnaud Montebourg has “committed a political and moral fault”. “With its measure, this is the first time that an innocent people have been condemned in place of a regime that it considers guilty. It is an inversion of values ​​”, he argues. “I condemn his proposal”, hammers the chosen one.
