Islamabad (CNN) – Dozens of passengers were killed and several more injured after a train collision in southern Pakistan on Monday morning local time.
The Sir Syed Express train collided with the Millat Express train in Sindh province, between stations, according to railway officials.
At least 45 people have died and officials are working to rescue at least 17 people who remain trapped, Edhi Rescue Services said. So far, 23 people have been rescued, the rescue service added.
Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan tweeted his condolences for the victims of Monday’s accident and said he was ordering a comprehensive investigation into rail safety.
Khan said he had asked the Minister of Railways to ensure that the injured received medical attention and that the families of the dead received support.
