A 14-year-old teenager left her home to go to a deli more than 20 days ago. Nothing is known about her

(CNN) – A 14-year-old New Jersey teenager has been missing for more than 20 days after she took a walk to a local deli from which she did not return, authorities said during a news conference Friday.

Jashyah Moore disappeared on the morning of October 14 while visiting a neighborhood deli near his home in East Orange, Police Chief Phyllis Bindi told reporters.

Surveillance footage from the deli shows a man paying for his items at the store, but they didn’t leave together. The man in the images is fully cooperating with the police, and there is no indication of any wrongdoing at this time, Bindi said.

Moore’s mother pleaded that anyone with any information on the young woman’s whereabouts share it immediately.

“Jashyah is a smart girl, I can’t reiterate that enough,” said Jamie Moore. “She would not be left out, she would not go out, she would not go with anyone.”

“I can’t imagine what she may be going through for being away from us for so long, for being away from her family who love her so much,” she continued.

The Essex County Sheriff’s Office, working in partnership with East Orange Police, is offering a $ 10,000 reward for any information that can locate Jashyah and return it safely. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the New Jersey State Police are also collaborating on the case.

City officials asked the community for any help it can provide, calling it a community effort to return Jashyah home. Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens II also stressed the importance of continuing to discuss this case so that the public remains vigilant.

“This reminds us that black and brown girls’ lives are just as important as everyone else’s,” Stephens said. “And we know that Gabby Petito, which is a very, very notorious case that was constantly in the news, gave results and information. So we hope that today’s effort will also bring some information so that we can find young Jashyah.”

While the cases of missing white women have received more attention and urgency, people of color are disappearing at a disproportionate rate. Blacks account for 35% of missing person reports, but only 13% of the US population, according to 2020 FBI data. Meanwhile, whites account for 54% of missing person reports and 76% of the American population.

Jashyah’s mother describes her as a homebody who likes to play video games and cook. She is also best friends with her little brother, who she plays with constantly, she added.
