“The censor will take us into a unique world that remains hidden from most people. The international festival jury was convinced by the work of Petr Kerekes,” it is written in the report on the awards of the 31st Cottbus Film Festival, which focuses on production from Central and Eastern Europe every November.

The story of one of the women’s prisons in Ukraine

A total of 170 films from 40 countries were presented at this year’s festival in Cottbus. Slovak cinematography was presented by a larger retrospective Spotlight: Slovakia. According to the organizers, despite the pandemic, more than 10,000 visitors came to the festival cinemas during the first week of November. Last year, this festival had an exclusively digital form. This year, selected images can be viewed online until November 16.

The film Censorka was made in a Slovak-Czech-Ukrainian co-production and tells the story of one of the women’s prisons in the Ukrainian city of Odessa, where Peter Kerekes and screenwriter Ivan Ostrochovský spent a total of six years visiting and filming. Most of the protagonists in the film play their true story.

The censor is also a Slovak candidate for the Oscar

The censor had its world premiere in September at the Venice Film Festival, where Kerekes and Ostrochovský won the award for best screenplay. In October, the film won the Silver Hugo Award for Best Director at the Chicago International Film Festival. The film is also the Slovak national candidate for the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Oscar) award in the category of the best foreign feature film.
