The tightening of pandemic measures in Austria has apparently worked – as the local government had hoped, many people have been vaccinated with the first dose of coronavirus vaccine over the weekend. From Monday, only people who have been vaccinated or overcome covid will be able to attend restaurants, hotels or cultural events in the country. Following the Austrian government’s announcement on Friday night that a negative coronavirus test would not suffice in many places, advice was followed by vaccination centers across the country. In Saturday alone, the health ministry reported nearly 32,000 vaccinations, bringing the weekly number of vaccinated doses to 213,000. They last recorded so many in Austria at the beginning of August.

The first doses accounted for only a third of Saturday’s number. According to the DPA, this can be explained by the fact that the pressure to vaccinate has increased in recent days, as employees who have not completed it or have not passed the covid have had to submit a test certificate several times a week since the beginning of November. In addition, many residents receive a third dose.

In Austria, less than 65 percent of the population is fully vaccinated. On Saturday, the country recorded 9943 new cases of coronavirus infection in the past 24 hours, which is the highest daily figure since the beginning of the pandemic. On Sunday, 8554 positive tested. Austrian Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg does not anticipate that restrictions for the unvaccinated will be lifted within six weeks due to the rapid increase in infected and intensive care units.
