At least eight people lost their lives and many more were injured at a music festival in Houston, USA. The tragedy occurred on Friday night local time during a crowd and panic at the Astroworld Festival, the local fire and rescue service said.

The crowd began to push to the stage at the time of rapper Travis Scott, who is organizing the festival, according to a statement from Houston fire chief Samuel Pena.

“People started falling, losing consciousness, and that created another panic,” Pena told a news conference. They transported 17 patients to the hospital, 11 of whom had cardiac arrest. In addition, medics at the festival provided treatment to more than 300 people, CNN reports.

The crowd took place shortly after 9 pm local time (Saturday 3 am CET). The concert, which was attended by approximately 50,000 visitors, was canceled shortly after reports of the first injured.

The organizers have not yet commented on the situation, but according to the authorities, Saturday’s program of the two-day festival will be canceled.

CNN reported footage of hundreds of people rushing quickly through the VIP entrance, knocking down metal detectors and ignoring security guards before the entrance was secured again by police.
