Unfortunately, low vaccinations and non-compliance have caused the third wave to be as strong, if not worse, than the second.

The situation is deteriorating significantly

The epidemiological situation continues to deteriorate significantly. On average, the tests reveal more than 6,000 positive cases per day with extremely high positivity. “We can expect an even greater number of people infected daily. We already have almost 2,000 hospitalized patients, which is a 45 percent increase over last week, and almost 200 patients are already ventilated.” said Matej Mišík, head of the Institute of Health Analyzes, at the beginning.

27 people die every day. Even when rescuers go to COVID patients, it can be seen that the number of trips doubles approximately every two weeks. In two weeks, it may be around 3,000 trips, which may correspond to the number of hospitalized. Most trips are in the Prešov region, where the situation is the worst.

8 out of 10 people are not vaccinated

In the past month, 8 out of 10 people admitted to hospitals were unvaccinated. “We see that people who make up 2 out of 10 incomes were significantly older and often have other complications and illnesses associated with them.” informed Mišík. For unvaccinated people, the age is on average 13 years lower than in the second wave.

In October, they admitted to about 4,000 unvaccinated and just under a thousand vaccinated to hospitals. As vaccinated people from at-risk groups can also enter hospitals, the third dose is extremely important for these people.

The third wave started earlier and is gaining strength

The second wave started at the end of September, this year the third wave started almost three weeks earlier. “If we compare the current situation with last year, we see an approximately three-week shift. We significantly exceeded the number of hospitalized, which we had at that time. The increase in hospitalizations is faster.” stated Mišík.

Of the approximately 55,000 people hospitalized so far, approximately 5,500 required artificial lung ventilation. “So very intensive and very unpleasant and expensive health care with severe consequences,” he said. More than 20 percent of hospitalized patients died. Of people over the age of 50, about one in five requires hospitalization, and of people over the age of 70, one in two.

We are facing the collapse of hospitals

The positive news is that the number of proto-vaccines has stabilized. Approximately 10,000 people are vaccinated with the first dose each week. “We believe that the severity of the situation will reach people and that the benefits of vaccination will be clear enough for them to consider vaccination. “ Of the adult population over 18, more than half already have at least the first dose.

The situation will certainly not be better at Christmas than it is now, Mišík emphasized on the margin of the hospital. The reason is also that hospitalizations are delayed by several weeks compared to new cases. So even if the case growth curve breaks right away, the situation in hospitals will get worse. Koščálová stated that with the current growth of hospitalized, all planned covid beds will be filled in as little as three weeks. “We are talking again about the possibility of the collapse of the health system,” she added.
