Zeman’s health condition prevents him from working fully, the council found out – SME.sk

PRAGUE. Czech president Miloš Zeman he is hospitalized in connection with a chronic illness which has led to an overall deterioration of his condition and thus cannot fully devote himself to his duties.

This was stated on Friday by Tomáš Zima, the head of the medical council, which was examining Zeman’s condition. The news server Novinky.cz informed about it.

Zeman was transferred from the intensive care unit to a regular bed on Thursday.

“The president’s condition still requires hospital care and at the moment does not allow him to fully devote himself to work duties,” Zima said.

“The nature and manifestations of the underlying disease are certainly very serious and the refinement of the prognosis will depend on the development of the disease, which is itself difficult to treat,” Zima added.

Members of the presidential council personally examined on Friday and also got acquainted with his medical records since the beginning of last week. They agreed that the president receives top-notch health care at Prague’s Central Military Hospital, where he has been since October 10.

Zeman has long suffered from lower limb neuropathy and diabetes. On Friday, he telephoned the acting prime minister Andrej Babiš a also gave an interview to Radio Frequency 1. He informed in it that he planned to appoint Petr Fiala, the leader of the winning coalition Together, as the new Prime Minister. He is due to contact Fiala via video conference on Saturday.

If Zeman is able to perform at least his most important constitutional duties, there is no reason to transfer his powers, said Senate President Miloš Vystrčil (ODS) in response to the Council’s opinion. Babiš, who believes that Zeman “is able to work completely normally” has the same opinion.

On November 9, the Senate Committee is to discuss further steps in the possible withdrawal of Zeman’s presidential powers in connection with his state of health.
