A huge fire in Žilina. An apartment building was burning in the Hájik housing estate, which is built west of the city center. The fire began to spread shortly before 11:00. Flames engulfed the top floor, and the fire probably spread from the balcony.

Rescue services evacuated the population to safety, according to the Žilina Regional Director of the Fire and Rescue Corps (HaZZ) Jaroslav Kapusniak, no injuries occurred.

The crisis staff will meet later this afternoon, at which they will also declare an emergency situation in connection with the fire. The house belongs to the ownership of the city. According to our information, the two apartments on the top floor are uninhabitable. Some are hit by water after extinguishing the fire.

One family of three asked the city for temporary, alternative accommodation. Residents will be able to take personal belongings from the apartments. The apartment building will then be secured against entry.

Firefighters are currently dismantling the roof structure on the site above the apartments that were affected by the fire. At the same time, they are looking for hidden fires. The situation on the spot was complicated by the wind.

When the structural engineer judges whether people will be able to return home. The cause of the fire will be investigated by an expert.
