“We need to step up our efforts to reduce emissions and mitigate the effects of the climate crisis. If we fail to do so, we will only be discussing the irreversible devastation of our planet and its habitats at future conferences.” Čaputová pointed out, adding that the young generation understands this problem.

Delegates were informed that in Slovakia, 42 percent of young people are “very worried” about the climate crisis, and at the same time 73 percent think that humanity has failed to care for the planet. Two-thirds consider the measures taken by politicians to tackle the climate crisis to be disappointing. Čaputová also pointed to a recent study from countries around the world, according to which 40 percent of young people are considering whether to have children at all as a result of the climate crisis.

Young people are running out of time, politicians excuses

“It’s clear that the younger generation knows we’re running out of time. And we’re running out of excuses for politicians.” declared the Slovak president.

She commended the European Union’s efforts to reduce emissions by at least 55 percent by 2030 and its plan to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. She added that the EU will help developing countries in the same direction.

Progress of Slovakia

Čaputová pointed out Slovakia’s significant progress in environmental protection over the past three decades. Slovakia’s total emissions have fallen by 46 percent since 1990, and methane emissions are more than half as low. Slovakia already produces 80 percent of its low-carbon electricity and will stop using coal to produce electricity from 2023. A total of 43 percent of the funds from the recovery plan want to be used by the Slovak Republic for green transport, industry and buildings.

The Slovak High Representative emphasized that the fight against the climate crisis requires the efforts of the whole world. “We must all contribute our fair work, including those states whose top officials did not come to Glasgow. This also applies to the financing of climate change measures.” stressed.

For example, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin did not come to Glasgow in person.

In connection with this call, Čaputová reminded that Slovakia doubled its voluntary contribution to the Green Climate Fund between 2019 and 2023.
