NEW YORK. Approximately 9,000 New York City employees must take unpaid leave because they refuse compulsory covid vaccination. The AP agency informed about it on Tuesday night.

City officials have ordered mandatory covid vaccinations for all public sector employees, including police and firefighters. The obligation came into force on Monday, November 1.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said that “unvaccinated employees will receive unpaid leave until they show their supervisor a certificate of vaccination.” De Blasio wrote on Twitter on Monday that 91 percent of the city’s employees could already be vaccinated. At the same time, he thanked everyone who did so.

Workers from some key sectors, such as the police and the fire brigade, express dissatisfaction with the compulsory vaccination regulation, the AP reminds. A New York trade union representing police officers has filed a lawsuit against the regulation.

Thousands of firefighters in the city reported their absence due to incapacity for work, which, according to the AP, expresses dissatisfaction with the measure. Daniel Nigro, chief of the fire department, said 18 of New York’s 350 firearms were out of service and many others were short of staff.

According to Nigro, firefighters who reported incapacity for work asked him to reconsider their decision. Their absence will affect the inhabitants of the city and colleagues, who will have to replace them. According to de Blasio, the city is taking action against employees who do not have reasonable grounds for incapacity for work.
