Slovak tennis players lead in the introductory performance in the C-group at the final tournament of the Billie-Jean King Cup in Prague over Spain 1: 0.
The starting point for the team of captain Matej Lipták was taken care of by Viktória Kužmová, who defeated Carla Suarezová Navarrová 6: 2, 3: 6, 6: 3. In the second single, the team unit Anna Karolína Schmiedlová and Sara Sorribesová Tormová competed.
Kužmová started against Suarez’s Navarro as from the party, twice broke the opponent’s serve and built up a 4-0 lead. The Slovaks performed well, she had the upper hand even in longer exchanges from the baseline, her punches along the line and throws came out. The Spaniard, who is saying goodbye to an active career in Prague, turned from 0:40 in the fifth game and averted the threat of a “canary”. The end of the set was again directed by Kužmová, she ended it with an ace.
In the second act, Suarezová Navarrová accelerated the game, started to get more into exchanges and, thanks to a quick break, bounced Kužmová 3-0. In the fifth game, she averted breakball, then performed two sovereign gems at the service station and forced a third set. In it, Kužmová led 3: 1. Suarez’s Navarro equalized to 3: 3, but the other three gems became the prey of Kužmová.
The Slovaks followed the triumph over the Spaniard from the WTA tournament in Madrid in 2019. “I love team competitions, whether it was the Fed Cup in the past or now the Billie-Jean King’s Cup. I’m glad the captain gave me confidence and I repaid him by earning a point. It suited me to be the first to enter the court. In the atmosphere was excellent in this respect, the service kept me at the crucial moments, “ Kužmová said in the first post-match interview.
