Russian gas has stopped flowing west through the Yamal pipeline – TVNOVINY.sk

Deliveries of Russian gas through the Yamal pipeline to Europe came to a halt on Saturday, according to a German gas network operator. However, Poland claims that it continues to receive sufficient supplies in accordance with its contract with Russia.

Russia’s Interfax news agency said on Saturday that the flow through the Yamal pipeline, which runs through Poland, had been switched to reverse mode, meaning that gas was currently flowing from west to east.

According to a spokesman for the state-controlled Polish gas company PGNiG, much less gas currently flows from the east than usual, but Poland still receives volumes that are in line with its contract.

Russia’s Gazprom gas group and its Gazprom Export division, which operates the pipeline, declined to comment. According to Reuters, it is not clear how Poland receives supplies via the Jamal gas pipeline.

Russia’s gas supplies are currently being closely monitored as commodity prices in Europe have risen sharply due to economic recovery and low inventories.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) as well as some European politicians have accused Gazprom of not doing enough to increase supplies to Europe before the approaching winter heating season. The Russian group claims that it is fulfilling its contractual obligations.
